12 Things Everyone Overpacks for Holiday Travel

We’ve all been guilty of overpacking our suitcases with “just-in-case” items we never use. Nobody wants to wear the same shirt throughout their vacation, but packing too much stuff is just as bad.

Traveling light can help you avoid pesky airline fees, but beyond that, you can enjoy your holiday without looking like you’re moving houses. Overpacking, on the other hand, just makes your trip one big logistical headache.

The goal of a vacation is to relax and enjoy yourself, not to drag around half your possessions. You’d agree that some items serve no real purpose on your trip, and you still carry them anyway.

Here are the top 12 items everyone overpacks and how you can travel smarter.

Books

The holidays are a great time to finally read those books. But only pack your entire reading list if you plan to start a mobile library.

Be realistic about how much time you have to read during vacation. One physical book for the flight and a loaded e-reader should be enough. Your books should weigh less than your carry-on allowance.

“Just In Case” Clothes

I’ve been guilty of the “what if” wardrobe too many times to admit. Extra sweaters, three backup outfits, and your luggage is too heavy before you know it.

The truth is most of those “just-in-case” scenarios never materialize. Pack for planned activities, not imaginary scenarios. In the rare case that a surprise event pops up, you have an excuse to shop at your destination.

Full-size Toiletries

Stop packing jumbo shampoo bottles and economy-sized toothpaste tubes. They’re not doing any favors with your luggage. They’re not only heavy but are usually against airline regulations.

Consider reusable travel containers or buy travel-sized versions. Better still, most destinations have stores where you can buy toiletries – shocking, right? Plus, most hotels provide the basics. You can save up that space for souvenirs instead.

Snacks

I understand the fear of getting hungry at 35,000 feet, but turning your suitcase into a mini fridge is a bit too much. A few protein bars and your favorite munchies are fine, but make sure they’re travel-friendly.

Airports typically have plenty of snack options (even if overpriced), and unless your destination is a remote island, there’s probably food there, too. Save that luggage space; if you need to, just pack your special dietary needs and snacks you can’t get elsewhere.

Shoes

We’ve all been there, staring at our shoe collection, convinced we need options for every possible scenario. But more often than not, packing four pairs of heels and three sets of sneakers only ends up eating premium luggage space.

Stick to the shoes you absolutely need: comfy walking shoes, one dressy pair, and weather-appropriate boots if needed. Remember to wear the bulkiest pair while traveling and pack the lighter ones. Your back will thank you.

Multiple Gadgets

When you factor in your laptop, tablet, e-reader, smartphone, camera, and portable gaming device, your carry-on suddenly feels like a military rucksack. But why do you need all those devices in the first place?

Unless you’re working or need specific devices, try to consolidate. A smartphone can handle your email, reading, basic photos, and entertainment needs. If you must bring multiple devices, at least leave the bulky cases behind.

Skincare Products

You’ll be fine for a few days on vacation without your entire 12-step skincare routine. Multiple serums, face masks, and moisturizers take up real estate and might even spill into your luggage.

According to NDTV, the essentials are a cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and hydrating mist. If you’re really concerned, transfer small amounts into travel containers. Many skincare brands also have travel-sized versions of their products.

Chargers and Cables

I know it’s tempting to pack every cable you own. But you don’t need three phone chargers and a random cord you haven’t used since 2016.

Keep it simple: one charger per device and maybe a backup for your phone. Consider a universal adapter or multi-port charger instead of individual ones. And please, use cable ties or old toilet paper rolls to keep them organized.

Jackets/Coats

One good versatile jacket or coat is usually enough, even for winter destinations. Instead of multiple bulky coats, pack thin, warm layers that can be mixed and matched.

Wear your heaviest coat during travel; it can also serve as a blanket on chilly flights. If you’re heading somewhere cold, consider water-resistant jackets that compress easily.

Excessive Medications

You should absolutely bring prescription meds and essentials like pain relievers. However, you don’t need three different types of allergy pills and every cold remedy you own.

Pack a small first-aid kit with the basics; remember that most destinations have pharmacies. Keep medications in their original containers (especially prescriptions) and pack them in your carry-on.

A week’s worth of backup meds? Smart. Your entire medicine cabinet? Maybe not.

Workout Gear

Packing running shoes and multiple gym outfits for the holidays is an optimistic plan. But let’s be honest. How many times have you worked out during a vacation?

If you’re seriously planning to keep fit, pack one or two quick-drying workout outfits. They can be washed. Also, wear our athletic shoes as travel shoes. Skip the yoga mat, resistance bands, and jump rope you won’t be using.

Many hotels have fitness centers, and you can count walking during sightseeing as exercise.

Full Makeup Collection

Six different foundations, the 35-color eyeshadow palette, and every brush you own aren’t making the cut. Holiday packing requires that you stick to your everyday essentials and one or two items for dressing up.

Multi-use products are your best friends. Instead of those bold blue eye shadows you rarely use at home, pick neutral shades that work with everything.
