Turning 40 brings a lot of changes, and one of the biggest things you might see is your skin. It’s like, one day, everything feels fine, and the next, you’re dealing with dryness, fine lines, and a complexion that’s not as vibrant as it used to be.
As someone well into my 40s, I’ve learned that just because my skin has changed doesn’t mean I have a problem. All this means is I have to do things differently.
Here are my top ways to keep looking healthy and radiant with a simple skincare routine.
1. A Hydrating Serum With Hyaluronic Acid for Fine Lines

After 40, skin tends to lose moisture more easily, leading to that dry, tight feeling we all love to hate. So, if you’re not already using a hydrating serum, now’s the time to start.
Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water. With regular use, you’ll notice an improvement in hydration and fine lines and wrinkles.
2. A Rich, Nourishing Moisturizer for Hydrated Skin

Your skin’s natural oil production slows down after 40, which means you’ll need something heavier to keep it soft and smooth. While you may have been able to get away with a lightweight lotion in your 20s and 30s, now’s the time to upgrade to a richer, more nourishing moisturizer.
I always recommend creams with ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and fatty acids, especially at night. These help repair your skin’s barrier and keep moisture locked in where it belongs. You’ll also notice that makeup goes on smoother and looks less cakey.
3. Retinol for Cell Turnover

Retinol is the gold standard when it comes to anti-aging. It’s a must after 40. This powerful ingredient increases cell turnover, helping smooth out fine lines, even skin tone, and boosting collagen production.
While it might sound intimidating and cause some peeling early on, today’s formulas are gentle enough for daily use without causing irritation. The key is to start slow — think every other night or every third night — and add sunscreen.
As you build up a tolerance, you can increase it to once every evening, but continue with sunscreen as this medication will make your skin very sensitive to the sun.
4. Vitamin C for Brightening

Vitamin C is one of my favorites. There’s just something about it. It’s like a wake-up call for your skin.
As you age, your skin can start to look dull and tired, and that’s where this antioxidant comes in. It brightens your complexion, fades dark spots, and helps protect against environmental damage like pollution and UV rays.
It works great with other products in your routine. Apply a few drops before your sunscreen, and you’re on your way to brightening and an extra layer of defense against sun damage.
5. Sunscreen With SPF 30 or Higher for Protection

If there’s one thing that can make or break your skin over time, it’s sunscreen. You may not have noticed how much you needed sunscreen before 40, but you’ll notice it now.
A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable at this point to prevent dark spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer. But don’t worry — sunscreens today are lightweight, non-greasy, and many double as a primer for your makeup.
6. A Lightweight, Hydrating Foundation for a Flawless Finish

I love makeup, especially natural-looking makeup. Now is the perfect time to start using a lightweight hydrating foundation.
Less is often more when it comes to makeup in your forties. Heavy, full-coverage formulas can settle into fine lines and make your skin look cakey or dull. Many lightweight foundations now come packed with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid or antioxidants, so they’re not only giving you coverage but also helping to keep your skin healthy and radiant.
7. Gentle Exfoliation for Renewed Skin

Exfoliation is a key part of any skincare routine, but after 40, it’s all about being gentle. You don’t want to make the problem worse.
As we age, our skin’s natural cell turnover slows down, leading to a dull complexion, clogged pores, and uneven texture. A gentle exfoliant, whether a mild scrub or a chemical exfoliant like glycolic or lactic acid, helps remove those dead skin cells and makes products absorb the skin better.
Just remember that if done too much, your skin can become very dry and irritated. So, keep it to once or twice a week, and you’ll be fine.
8. Water, Water, Water for Hydration Inside Out

Dehydrated skin can lead to dryness, fine lines, and a dull complexion, no matter how many moisturizers and serums you use. When you’re properly hydrated, your skin looks plumper, smoother, and more radiant.
Your skincare routine must include water–inside and out.
Try rinsing your face with water or micellar water in the morning instead of using a cleanser, and drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Feel free to increase the amount if you’re active or live in a hot climate.
9. Beauty Sleep… For Everything

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. Getting enough quality sleep is essential for your skin’s overall health, especially as you age. When you sleep, your body goes into repair mode, regenerating skin cells, boosting collagen production, and reducing inflammation.
Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to give your skin the time it needs to rejuvenate. Skimp on sleep, and you’ll likely notice it right away — think dark circles, puffiness, and a tired, dull complexion.
10. A Gentle Cleanser for Balanced Skin

Harsh cleansers that strip away natural oils can leave your skin feeling tight, dry, and irritated. Look for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that removes dirt, makeup, and impurities without disrupting your skin’s moisture barrier.
Ingredients like glycerin or aloe can help soothe and hydrate while giving your skin a thorough clean. Avoid exfoliants and irritants.
11. Face Masks for a Targeted Skin Boost

Whether you’re looking for hydration, brightening, or firming, there’s a mask out there to give your skin exactly what it needs. Only needed once or twice a week, this quick tool can really elevate your skincare game. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to relax for 15-20 minutes while your skin soaks in all the goodness.
Get masks that are packed with ingredients like hyaluronic acid for moisture, antioxidants for protection, or peptides for firming. They provide a concentrated boost of nutrients that can leave your skin feeling plump, refreshed, and radiant after just one use.
12. Limited Sugar and Alcohol for Healthier Skin

Cutting back on sugar and alcohol is one of the most impactful changes you can make. A well-balanced diet feeds your skin.
Nutrient-packed foods like leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, and nuts provide essential vitamins like A, C, and E, which protect your skin from environmental damage and support collagen production. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon and walnuts, are especially great for keeping your skin hydrated and reducing inflammation.
13. Yoga and Meditation for Less Stress

Yoga and meditation go beyond calming your mind — they also reduce stress. Stress is a major trigger for breakouts, dullness, and premature aging.
When you’re less stressed, your cortisol levels drop, meaning less inflammation and irritation for your skin. Plus, the increased circulation from yoga boosts oxygen flow to your skin cells, giving you a natural glow that no product can replicate.
Whether it’s a quick morning yoga session or a few minutes of meditation before bed, integrating these practices into your routine will leave your skin looking refreshed and calm. I love it.
